So a funny thing happened on the way to the Grammys…
For a huge part of my life, regardless of whatever else I may have been doing for fun & profit at the time, down deep I have always viewed myself as being “just a guitar player and songwriter from Pinson, Alabama”. Even when I had more impressive sounding (Founder, Chairman, CEO) gigs, this is still how I introduced myself to new folks.
I think the psych profile behind it all had something to do with the fact that I wanted to be identified with (and for) creativity and community, and not just for whatever apparent success I had achieved in commerce.
As I got older, and experimented with a broader spectrum of things in the art of business, the more I realized the only person forcing that false dichotomy between creativity and commerce was in fact me. Once I realized these dynamics of my life did not have to live at tension with one another the whole world opened up and things became infinitely clearer. The same things that were leading me to want to surround myself with the best of the best musicians and do my part to give a voice to unspoken emotions for whatever audience we may be playing to… were the same things that were inspiring me to want to surround myself with the most talented business minds to create and craft real solutions for real problems for real people in the world around me.
Who knew that vibes that formed the center of gravity for a great jam band out there trying to building real community and write the songs that made the whole world sing… were the same vibes that built great businesses and brands?!
So in the grand scheme of things, yes I still absolutely identify as a guitar player and songwriter from Pinson, Alabama… but I no longer have to limit myself to“just” being that, while hiding my business successes in a corner. Turns out it's not only OK, it's absolutely imperative to have a creative, rock n' roll soul across the full spectrum of art and commerce.
